The Brand

Seventy Years Of Building Scooters

SYM is the two-wheeler brand of Sanyang Motor Co., a Taiwanese manufacturer whose predecessor began in 1954 and which was formally incorporated in 1961. It started out assembling Honda machines under licence, went on to build Hyundai cars for the Taiwanese market, and has spent the decades since becoming one of Asia’s largest scooter makers in its own right.

Today Sanyang runs plants in Taiwan, China and Vietnam and sells into around 90 countries under a stated “Quality First” production standard. The engineering shows up in the everyday details: four-valve heads, ceramic-coated and steadite-alloy cylinders, and EFI fuel injection across much of the range. The brand line is “Engine of Life — Enjoy Riding”.

Common questions

SYM Questions

Is the 6-year warranty on SYM scooters real?

Yes. As of 14 September 2026, every new SYM scooter in Australia carries a 6-year warranty: 4 years to any owner, then a further 2 years (years 5 and 6) exclusive to the original owner and non-transferable, covering manufacturing defects up to 40,000 km and excluding batteries and consumables. A subsequent owner’s cover reverts to 2 years from the original purchase date. It is a manufacturer warranty, claimed through authorised SYM dealers and workshops like ours. Full current terms are published on SYM Australia’s warranty page at scoota.com.au/warranty.

Who makes SYM scooters?

SYM is the brand of Sanyang Motor Co., a Taiwanese manufacturer whose predecessor started in 1954 and which was incorporated in 1961. It began by assembling Honda machines under licence, later built Hyundai cars for the Taiwanese market, and today produces scooters, mopeds and motorcycles at plants in Taiwan, China and Vietnam, selling into around 90 countries.

Are SYM scooters good quality?

SYM builds to a "Quality First" production standard with decades of engineering behind it — four-valve heads, ceramic-coated and steadite-alloy cylinders, and EFI fuel injection across much of the range. In practice they are known as dependable, easy to service, and cheaper to run and insure than the European badges, which is why they are a common first scooter and a common workshop favourite.

Can I ride a SYM on a car licence in WA?

Some of them. A SYM moped that is 50cc and designed not to exceed 50 km/h can be ridden on a full WA car licence. Anything larger needs a motorcycle licence. See our WA scooter and motorcycle licence guide for the full breakdown.

Where can I buy and service a SYM in Perth?

Here. We are a SYM dealership in Dianella selling new and used SYM scooters, with a workshop that handles SYM servicing, warranty work, tyres and repairs whether or not you bought the bike from us.
