250cc+ Scooter Questions
What licence do I need to ride a 250cc or larger scooter in WA?
A motorcycle licence. Anything past 50cc is well outside the moped rules, so a car licence is not enough — but the maxi scooters on this page are LAMS-approved, which means you can ride one from your R-E learner’s permit onwards rather than waiting for an unrestricted licence.
Are 300cc and 400cc scooters LAMS approved?
The ones we sell are. A LAMS-approved bike must be 660cc or less and under 150 kW/tonne, and the maxi-scooter class sits comfortably inside both limits. We will confirm the approval for any specific model before you buy.
Why is a "300cc" scooter listed as 278cc?
Because that is the real capacity. Badged sizes are rounded for marketing — SYM’s 300-series engine measures 278cc and the 400 measures 399cc. It makes no difference to registration or licensing, as both sit in the same bracket either way.
What is the difference between a 250cc+ scooter and a 125cc?
Mostly reach. A 125cc scooter is built for suburban roads; from 250cc up you get the power to sit on 100 km/h indefinitely, real overtaking ability, a chassis and brakes to match, and usually better wind protection and underseat storage. The trade is a higher purchase price and slightly more fuel.

Can a 250cc+ scooter handle Perth freeways?
Easily — this is the size where a scooter stops being a city-only bike. A 300 or 400 holds 100 km/h on the Mitchell and Kwinana without straining, carries a pillion properly, and has the storage and weather protection to make a longer commute genuinely pleasant.
